Craftsman 6 inch lathe model 113.12540

I just started working with this lathe. I have noticed that the lever to engage the gears slips and the gears won't fully engage. I am afraid of ever tightening, as I may break something and not be able to get replacement parts.
What I would really like to know is how to remove the chuck. It has a 3 jaw chuck and I would like to find and use a 4 jaw chuck, as well as a face plate.
I would like any information available on this machine. It has passed through many hands and many things have been lost.
