Walker Turner (Drill Press) DP-101

Walker Turner Drill Press model # DP-101

Walker Turner Drill Press model # DP-101 "Driver" series

I bought this at a garage sale in Bremerton, WA about 20 years ago. I have used it a few times, but I noticed that it had been repaired, where the drill head clamps to the main shaft, with a steel band. When I was tightening the clamp for the table it broke there too, I keep it on with a C-clamp. Can I have the cast iron parts repaired? It is adjustable with two speeds by changing the belt on different pulleys. The pulleys and shafts where the belt turns 90 degrees are severely worn, any ideas how to repair them?

Thanks

Robin

Robin,
That is a fine old collectors machine. Yes, the cast iron can be repaired. There are good cast iron weld rods available today and a knowledgeable welder can do a good job of the repair. However, it won't be any stronger than it was originally so your old machine may not be a working tool but a show off piece. Apparently the castings were under engineered or of a poor quality originally as they broke in normal use. If the pulleys are really special and you can't find a suitable replacement, they will have to be welded and machined back to shape. That could be pretty expensive if you can't do it yourself. I would think that pulleys and shafts could be bought off the shelf close enough to be trimmed up to fit.
Good luck with a fine old machine and let us know how it turns out. I have a later model Walker Turner here: https://www.old-woodworking-tools.net/walker-turner-20-floor-model-drill-press-serial-110350.html
