Wooden Bar Clamp

Wooden Bar Clamp

Purchased at an estate sale in North Carolina. Previous owner was known to make frequent trips to Thailand. So far, I cannot find any information on this type of clamp. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Antique Wooden Bar Clamps

I just came into possession of about 10-12 of these clamps all in good condition. Any ideas as to their value or ideas on how to use/display them? I'll probably use a few of them.

The other letters are almost right but often the hardware was purchased and the craftsman built the bar to put them on. One place that made the hardware was the Grand Rapids Michigan Superior Clamp CO. The 1875-1910 dates are pretty close.

Must be mass produced
by: Dale

I disagree and think these were factory made as I just bought an identical set. Mine are marked 'J. B. Miller,' but that could be the owners stamp. Mine are maple. There are too many of these out there to all be made individually to identical specs. Plus mine has a brass or copper cap with a sharp point on the screw end, and I don't think everyone could do that, plus the iron strap for the moveable pawl.

Missing part
by: Anonymous

It appears to be missing the pressure plate that the screw presses on. I have one with the plate and the letters: D. Boone

clamps

I have 2 very similar clamps from about the same era, the difference being the crank is more like a modern Pony clamp. The name is barely discernible; Chicago Barrel Don & Co. I believe they were used in cabinet making or perhaps other furniture.

Steel and wood
by: Anonymous

I have a bar clamp that looks a little like this one. I purchased a tool box full of tools. The carpenter died around 1950 and most of the tools are made between 1870-1910. Most tradesmen made their own wooden tools. I have a nice collection of Swedish hand tools and some American. I'm a steel and Wood person ,no plastics.

Wooden bar clamps like this one were commonly made by the carpenters who used them. It is unlikely to have been mass produced.

Alden Watson illustrates several types in his book on country furniture.
