Wood Lathe

Bought an ole Walker-Turner lathe, disassembled/cleaned, re-greased/re-assembled it. It seems to be turning smoothly. But when I tried turning a pc of Sycamore (ab 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 14") it quit running ans just hummmed ab half way thru. There was no model No. and it came with a Dayton Split Phse AC motor No. 5K282A 1/3 HP and it got very hot. Heeeeelp!
